Myanmar arrests over one thousand foreign nationals over online fraud
The army conducted the raids between November 18 and 22 in Shwe Kokko, a known hub for gambling and online scams. Officials said the detainees had entered Myanmar illegally. Authorities also confiscated 2,893 computers, 21,750 mobile phones, 101 Starlink satellite receivers, 21 routers, and a large quantity of industrial equipment linked to the operations.
Those arrested hailed from numerous countries, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Indonesia, Uganda, India, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Pakistan, Rwanda, Kenya, Nigeria, Nepal, South Korea, Egypt, and Madagascar.
Since the 2021 military coup, which sparked civil conflict in Myanmar, scam hubs have proliferated across the country’s poorly regulated border regions.
