Twin Quakes Jolt Myanmar's Western Region

(MENAFN) Myanmar experienced seismic activity on Tuesday when a powerful tremor shook the nation's western region, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit near Sittwe, the administrative center of Rakhine state, at 1534GMT, with its epicenter located 62.7 kilometers (38.9 miles) beneath the surface, the USGS reported.

The seismic event was followed by a second tremor just minutes later at 1551GMT, registering magnitude 5.2 and originating from a depth of 67.8 kilometers (42.14 miles) in an adjacent area, according to USGS data.

No immediate damage assessments or casualty reports had emerged at press time.

The twin quakes occur against the backdrop of devastating seismic history in the region. On March 28, 2025, Myanmar suffered catastrophic losses when a magnitude 7.7 earthquake claimed 3,800 lives and forced tens of thousands from their homes, leaving widespread destruction across affected areas.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation as aftershock assessments remain ongoing in Rakhine state and surrounding territories.
